And - not for the faint of heart.

I have been remiss in my updates, so I got caught up this morning. Monday, I hurt my back doing squats by accidently putting an extra plate on one side of my barbell and being off balance, so I switched to the leg press machine and in tryin to get the plates adjusted, I unknowingly knocked the cable off a pulley. Trying to fix that, I pulled the cable off another pulley. Now I have to remove a bunch of pulleys and re-string the machine.

I got a decent upper body workout this morning, but had a lot a distractions and some help from the cats, so my time was off and I am defering my back exercises until this evening. To round it out I will do some ab work as well, perhaps some floor wipers.

This is not going as planned. Assuming the numbers off my scale are anywhere close to being right (and I weigh at a consistent-ish time and circumstances), at the end of week one I am 2.8 pounds heavier, but have lost 2.38 pounds of Fat, meaning I have put on 5.18 pounds of Muscle. That is what I would like to think anyway. These scales try to guess your body fat content based on measuring electrical impedence. Muscle is mostly water (Creatine, which I drink nearly once a day, works to draw water into muscle) so electricity moves faster through it. It moves more slowly through fat. So BFMs measure how well I am retaining water.

I have been hydrating really well, drinking 48 to 64 ounces of pure water each day, then some amount of beverages that are mostly water. The old idea used to be that drinking sodas, tea and coffe, etc. did not hydrate you like water, but more recent studies suggest they are fine (not counting HFCS and all the empty calories sodas have).

Maybe today I will go to Academy and buy a Tanita scale.

There was not really a Saturday workout. I got up at 6 (Laura got up at 5) and we drove down to load up Mia and drive with her cousins to Lomax arena. Laura got four ribbons participating in the various events (photos to come). We were most of the day walking around in the heat (Laura got sunburned badly) then in the afternoon the rain poured like crazy. Under the metal roof of the arena it sounded awesome.

Back at the pasture, the neighbor had let her stud into the back half and I proved that you catch more horses with peppermint treats than she can with sticks and stones and we led the horse back to its home.

I tried to stay pretty well hydrated, but when we ran out of water I had to drink a Big Red.

Comparing my weight lifting to last year, I am starting out at a lower point I think, or just different, I am not sure. This year I have some really clear cut goals I want to achieve and a very motivated partner - who is doing great by the way!

This is the year I really do it. I need all of your support and encouragement.

Ow.

I think I had a pretty good first day work out yesterday. Today I did cardio with Tire Flipping, but not as long as I wanted to. The big problem is the whole maximum heart rate thing. Your maximum heart rate is supposed to be 220 minus your age. For me that is 175. It does not take much effort to max me out and beyond, especially tire flipping.

Although I am logging my food, I am not going to post it to the web. It takes to much time and effort when my exercise log is enough of a problem and the food I eat is petty boring. I have to keep logging it for myself though because it helps me maintain discipline.

My water/liquid intake is good. I usually have 16 oz with creatine in the morning, 32, 48, or 64 oz of pure water at work, perhaps a cup of Earl Gray with sugar, and perhaps some juice at home.

I am a little sore in places; my triceps and the part of my pecs where dumbell flyes give them a stretch (I think).

Tomorrow, lower body. I am going to do some test squats until I get my weight, leg curls, toe raises and maybe some reverse crunches or flutter kicks.

I am beginning again. This time I have a dedicated party and we are going to follow the Body for Life program which has worked quite well for me before. We will exchange notes and encouragement daily and work to keep each other motivated.

The new program begins Monday, so be ready to check here for daily updates.

Well, it has been over a month since I seriously worked out. Although I have been doing some pretty physical work on the weekends, it has been just enough to keep me more or less stable.

For a couple days last week, I did some work on the machine trying to gear up again, but I did not sustain it. Last night I picked up a book called The Abs Diet. It is a diet and exercise planned designed to focus on visceral belly fat that leads to numerous health problems. It is a six week plan. L~ and I are BOTH going to be doing it whether she likes it or not. I will read the book today, start logging my food and warm up with some exercise, then go full scale starting Monday.

I am going to set up my photo studio so that all my photos have consistent lighting and background on a level surface and will do four views every Sunday.

Instead of running, I plan on us doing cycling. Better for our knees and generates more breeze. I need to get a flat fixed on my front tire this weekend and check out L's bicycle.

I have been taking some time off and I need to get back to it. Tomorrow may help. It looks like I will be building a stall for a horse and washing the trailer. That ought to work off some calories. But even though I am not really on track for my goals, at least I don't look like 47-year old Val Kilmer, a guy who can afford to be doing better for himself.
